Chon-Aksu: examining possible causes of the debris flow

Event:

The Institute’s post examines the debris-flow event of 3 July 2026 in the Chon-Aksu basin. Comparing Sentinel-2 images from 23 June and 5 July, the authors propose that an advancing erosion gully reached and drained a lower moraine-thermokarst lake.

This is the authors’ proposed explanation of the event. The post also discusses links between geological processes and the importance of observing mountain lakes. The original publication contains the full analysis and further illustrations.
